Andy Murray was absent from the parade of Olympians and Paralympians that, as Boris Johnson unforgettably phrased it, brought "the final, tear-sodden, juddering climax of London 2012". The Scot was needed in New York. He had work to do...
Having already become the first British tennis player in 100 years to win singles gold at the Olympics, his task was now to become the first British man in 76 years to win a grand slam title.
And he did it! Kudos Murray. You've done Britain proud!!
