Academic activities are expected to resume in public primary and secondary schools in Lagos State today,
as the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has called off the strike it started on Monday as a result of the government's failure to pay them the 27.5 per cent Teachers Peculiar Allowance.
A source at the state Ministry of Education told THIDSAY that the strike was called off Tuesday evening after series of meetings between the state government and members of the union.
The source added that the state government promised to commence full implementation of the payment by January next year, and that it would start working out the modality for the implementation, just as it would ensure that the new salary regime would be included in next year's budget.
With the suspension of the strike, teachers and students have expressed relief and delight that the academic session would not be disrupted after all.
A teacher, who preferred anonymity said: "I am not surprised that the strike has been called off because of the information I got from one of the leaders of the union, who said that the Oba of Lagos had intervened and the governor promised to pay. We can only hope the government fulfils its promise.
