"We are coming to rape your wives!" Boko Haram tells Nigerian leaders
Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau has appeared in a stunning video uploaded on YouTube and alleged that Nigerian security forces are holding in custody 10 women, wives of members of the dreaded sect.
With a laugh to send chills down the spine, Shekau made the following ominous promise: ” You should wait and see what’s going to happen to your own wives.”
Shekau further alleged that the women are being repeatedly raped by security personnel to the knowledge of government officials and swore to exact retribution for the affront.
It is not altogether clear if the video is an authentic production of the sect but there certainly are indications that it may be.
It will be recalled that Nigerian government spokesmen had earlier made the assertion that they were in talks with Boko Haram to find a peaceful resolution of the face-off. However, Shekau vehemently denies this and also rubbishes the government claims that the spokesman of the sect Abu Qaqa had been killed in a military operation of the Nigerian Army.
If the video is authentic and indeed a production of Boko Haram, Nigerian government officials will certainly henceforth keep a tight lid on their wives. Harrowing times indeed.
The timing of the video’s release coincides with the celebration Monday of Nigeria’s Independence Day. Speaking earlier on state-run broadcasters, President Jonathan told the nation that Nigeria had “refused to be broken by sectarian crises.”
“Our security agencies are constantly being strengthened and repositioned for greater efficiency,” Jonathan said. However, Nigeria’s military and police remain almost daily targets of the sect’s guerrilla insurgency.
On Monday in Maiduguri, the spiritual home of Boko Haram, a bomb targeting a military patrol vehicle exploded in the northeastern city. A witness later told the AP he saw one dead soldier and several others injured in the blast. A military spokesman confirmed the attack happened, but declined to immediately provide details about it.
